Chad Walton - A Coach Honolulu

And from the blue corner...returning after a several year hiatus from TeamJet (to graduate, get married and completely rebuild a house; in that order)...Chad Walton. Chad returns with his knowledge and personality (you can decide on the merits of those) to help guide the marathon group to another successful year.  Chad has a long history of running, but now primarily relies on his work in gene therapy to provide that little something extra for those looking to outrun a cheetah.  He has a penchant for speed work on grass, and is excited to share his insights and coaching techniques with all levels of TeamJetters.

Matt Pitts - A Coach Honolulu

mattpitts
Matt grew up in San Francisco Bay Area and began running competitively in intermediate school. He went to high school in Mountain View , CA where he competed on the varsity cross-country and track & field teams for all four years. After Mountain View , he attended college at UCLA, majoring in psychobiology and competing on the cross-country and track & field teams. At UCLA, he was coached by 2004 Olympic distance coach Bob Larsen where he was a 3-time letter winner in cross-country and a Pac-10 scorer on the track in the 3000m steeplechase.

In 2004, Matt moved to Hawaii to pursue graduate studies in Cell & Molecular Biology at the University of Hawaii . Lately he has trying to get himself back into shape by participating in local triathlons and road races. He looks forward to working with others who enjoy running and helping them to run their best.

Rick Varley - B Coach Honolulu

rick

Rick's love for running started as a competitive sprinter in high school where he ran for the winningest H.S. track coach in the country, and continued through college. His specialty was the 400m; his favorite race was the 200m. As a result of a dare at age 30, Rick competed in his first marathon, and he has been hooked ever since.
Rick has completed 15 marathons in Hawaii and Japan, and numerous road races around the country. His team took first place three years ago in the Oahu Perimeter Relay, and has placed in the top three in many of the relays around the state.
Rick founded the Manoa Road Runners at the University of Hawaii, and has been a successful race director of the NIKETOWN Off-Road Challenge and the Honolulu International Triathlon (HIT). Five years ago, Rick became hooked on triathlon, and has since competed in every triathlon on Oahu. As a self-taught distance runner (converting fast-twitch to slow-twitch muscles), Rick offers a different approach to training, and is especially good at developing speed and strength.

Rick is author of the book, "Runner's Guide to Oahu"

Mark "Marky Mark" Ahsing - C Coach Honolulu

MarkyMark

My list of accomplishments are long. I have done 20 marathons, 15 Iron man triathlons, 30 half iron triathlons, and numerous other shorter distance races. I have medaled in all of the races, and still have time to help the homeless. Oh wait, my REAL accomplishments only count, alright. I have been with Chet for a while now, coaching the D group since I joined Team Jet. I have completed 7 marathons, a few Tinmans and Keauhou half ironman triathlons, with the idea of finishing and having a good time. That's what the D group represents, having fun and finishing strong. The D group has evolved into a strong group of runners who started out with no idea of what marathon running was all about. I call my self the "social coordinator" versus a coach, only because our running sessions are about enjoying the run. If there is no enjoyment, then what is the use of doing it, right? Learning how to relax, run strong, and avoid injuries has become the mantra of the group, so I hope to see you out there, if not in the D group, in one of the groups Team Jet has to offer.

An accomplished triathlete and runner, this is Dustin's third year as the Jog/walk Group marathon coach. He successfully coached many jog/walk group athletes to completing their first ever marathon over the last 2 years.

Selina - E Coach Honolulu

selina

After numerous vacations to Hawaii, Selina and her huband made the move permanent to Honolulu from San Diego six years ago.  Although an avid runner in her youth, Selina took a temporary hiatus from the sport until she met local runners and joined TeamJet right after moving to the Islands.  In addition to running and leading an active lifestyle, she enjoys traveling and exploring new places.

Selina is looking forward to using training methods recommended by Jeff Galloway to ensure that The E Group not only trains for the Honolulu Marathon, but has fun in the process.

I have been running and coaching with Team Jet since 2001.  I have tried other running groups but none have matched the fun loving and team spirit as this group has done.  I ran my first marathon in 95 and was hooked ever since.  It was training with Team Jet that I was able to break the 4 hour marathon in 2001.  Chet also got me hooked on triathlons in 2002.  Training with Team Jet, I won a slot and did the 2004 Kona Ironman Chamionship (and had fun doing it, if you can imagine that).

I started running when I was 28 years old,  when I went back to college to get my degree in Physical Education.  Running was a quick way to stay in shape between classes, studing and taking care of my family.  While in school the track coach asked me to join his team because he needed a two and three mile runner.  I didn't want to do it because I was afraid to compete against girls eight to ten years my junior.  He talked me into it and I was the only woman racing with a five year old cheering her on.  With practice,  I was able to hold my own and even win a few.  Two things that experience taught me was; one, make sure you get training when you try new experiences and two; don't let fear hold you back because you will never know until you go for it.

I have been in the fitness industry since 1980 and have a degree in physical education.  I am still in the fitness industry, and currently personal training and instructing aerobic classes at some of the Navy bases in Hawaii.

I am looking forward to meeting you all.

I have completed 13 marathons and trained with Team Jet for my last 5 marathons.  Although I have trained for marathons on my own, running is much more enjoyable with a group and Team Jet is the best running group I have experienced.  In addition to having lots of fun, there is great support in reaching and exceeding each runner's goals.
