Steve Allnutt

Steve is a new coach/coordinator to Team Jet's swimming department. He grew up in Forest Grove, Oregon and began competitively swimming in high school. His thirst for knowledge and competition has led him to UH Manoa where he is currently a Junior on the Men's Swimming Team. He is a major in Kinesiology, with plans to study sport science in relation to swimming, and coaching. For the Rainbow Warriors he specializes in middle-distance/distance freestyle, IM, and backstroke. He has done many of the open water races around the island since arriving here, with top ten places in the Waikiki Roughwater, Duke's Ocean Mile, Maui ('au'au) Channel Swim, and winning one of the stops along the North Shore Swim Series this past summer. He first was introduced to Team Jet when he assisted with the Hon Tri swim training in 2008. You may recognize Steve as he has competed alongside Chet in many triathlon relays throughout the past few years, and shown up at a few team functions for the promise of food. He looks forward to helping everyone improve on their swimming, learn to enjoy the water more, and see people accomplish more than they ever thought they could!

Quinn Michie-Horner

With 22 years of competitive swimming experience and 13 years of coaching/teaching experience, I have a passion for sharing my love of the water and honing athletes in pursuit of their personal goals. As a Division I collegiate swimmer, I was fortunate to have my skill pay for school, still hold the school record in the 200 IM, named MVP three times, was co-captain, and received my school's Inspirational and Citizenship awards for work as a student-athlete outside the pool. I¹ve had the opportunity to work on the coaching staff at the University of Texas at Austin, U.S. Air Force Academy, and the University of New Mexico, in addition to various triathlon, club, and high school coaching experiences. As a post-collegiate athlete, I've earned All-American honors as a Master's swimmer, qualified for Boston on my second marathon, and completed numerous triathlons including a half-Ironman. In 2009, my first year racing open water, I won both the Kailua Dash 'n Splash and Popoia Island Swim, was the 4th woman overall in the Raging Isle Sprint, and the 5th woman overall in both the Waimea Bay and North Shore Challenge. After years of dedication to training, I¹ve learned that it's all more enjoyable when you're having fun and the PRs that follow are an added bonus! Happy Training! Quinn

Growing up in Hawaii every one knows about local style plate lunches. My favorite was garlic chicken, sounds harmless right. But when the chicken is battered with flour, butter, garlic, and then deep fried. Nothing healthy about it, not to mention the white rice and mayonnaise smothered macaroni salad that comes with it. With all these foods that taste so good it’s hard to tell yourself to resist. I reached 250lbs, had a 40 inch waist, wore XXL shirts, and felt so tired all the time. In 2003 I realized following this routine would lead to some serious health issues in the future. This began the start of a life changing journey for me. I slowly cut portion sizes and then watched what I ate. Exercise was tough as I could only do about 20 to 30 min, 2 to 3 times a week. But this did not stop me; it motivated me to do more.

Because of my weight I could not run, so a bicycle was a good option for me. By 2005 I got down to 200 lbs by riding 5 to 6 times a week. Entering my first bike race in 2006, I ended up wining several events that year. I was so excited; I pushed my self to compete among Hawaii’s best endurance athletes. This goal helped me to get to 180lbs. and down to a 32 inch waist.

With a new physique, determination and fitness the next step would be triathlons. In 2008 I added running and swimming to my workouts. Being self coached, I set my goal to do my first triathlon at the 2009 Honu Half Ironman in Kona. Then decided to add two shorter distance races to gain some experience before Kona. Competing against tough local competition, I placed well overall and won my age group in the first race of the year.

Exercise/training has become a daily part of my life, and now my career. Currently I work as a healthy lifestyle coach for the YMCA and as a cycling coach for Team Jet Hawaii (triathlon training). Also became a certified group instructor in 2009. I hope to encourage others through my job and as a ex-couch potato, now competitive athlete.

Mike Flartey

With years and years of rides ranging from 12 and 24 hour ultracycles to cross country attempts, Mike is a full out most awesomest cycling rockstar who obviously enjoys writing his own bios for the Team Jet website, who also hopes that he can help out anyone looking to brush up on their skills with riding or maintnance or for those who are even starting riding for the first time. I hope to share my knowledge with anyone who may need it. See you out there!

Rick Varley

With 16 years of competitive triathlon experience under his belt, Rick offers practical knowledge of bike training and race preparation. He has developed a solid training program for advanced, intermediate and beginning cyclists. Rick is the author of "A Runner's Guide to Oahu", and has started work on his next project, "A Cycling Guide to Oahu".

1/2 Marathon

David Carlsson

David has been a runner for 14 years now. A competitive swimmer, and long distance cyclist in his youth, he only took up running in his mid 30's after he witnessed the Ironman Kona World Championship first hand while visiting friends. Fully inspired to finish one himself, he began training for, and finished the Maui Marathon five months later. He has since finished four Ironman triathlons and 46 marathon and ultra marathons. After his move to Oahu five years ago, through a combination of diet and coaching, David was able to take 34 minutes off of his marathon PR in eight months to qualify for Boston and run sub 3 hour. David is anxious to pass on this learned knowledge and is glad to be part of the Team Jet Coaching Staff. Named Hawaii's 2007 Athlete of the Year by Athlete's HI magazine for his versatility in running, he runs everything from 5K to 100K, on the trails and the road.

Mark Ahsing

My list of accomplishments are long. I have done 20 marathons, 15 Iron man triathlons, 30 half iron triathlons, and numerous other shorter distance races. I have medaled in all of the races, and still have time to help the homeless. Oh wait, my REAL accomplishments only count, alright. I have been with Chet for a while now, coaching the D group since I joined Team Jet. I have completed 7 marathons, a few Tinmans and Keauhou half ironman triathlons, with the idea of finishing and having a good time. That's what the D group represents, having fun and finishing strong. The D group has evolved into a strong group of runners who started out with no idea of what marathon running was all about. I call my self the "social coordinator" versus a coach, only because our running sessions are about enjoying the run. If there is no enjoyment, then what is the use of doing it, right? Learning how to relax, run strong, and avoid injuries has become the mantra of the group, so I hope to see you out there, if not in the D group, in one of the groups Team Jet has to offer.

Rick Klobuchar

Rick began training with Team Jet just over a year ago, and has been trying to get Chet to throw in a free cycling jersey ever since. He finds pleasure in repeatedly striking checks to Team Jet so he can have some drill sergeant "motivate" him to become the best athlete he can. He grew up in the well-known hockey town of Virginia Beach, where inline hockey dominated the early part of his life. He led his team to a National Championship in 1997 in Tulsa, OK. A Virginia State Championship in Men's Volleyball followed the next year. He continued playing hockey throughout his four years at Virginia Tech, while working in more running until one of his friends convinced him to run a marathon. He still doesn't forgive this person! Since then, he has run in the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach, the Honolulu Marathon, the Val Nolasco ½ Marathon, and the Niketown 30K. The Haleiwa Metric Century and Honolulu Century rides were so easy he decided he wanted to throw swimming and running into the mix as well, so he competed in the Honolulu and Tinman Triathlons and Waikiki Roughwater swim last year. He is currently training for the Honu/Half-Ironman and is planning on getting his head scanned soon because even after this torture, he still wants to do a full Ironman!

Brian Carr

Brian completed his first Triathlon at the age of 10 and has been hooked ever since. He was inspired by his father's Ironman Kona finishes which strengthened his interest in the sport. Growing up he participated in the Ironkids series and earned a slot to race in the national championship. Although Brian has never completed an Ironman he has completed several Sprint and Olympic distance Triathlons as well as a half dozen Tinman's. Brian was an actively involved member of Teamjet from 2003 – 2005. He and his wife moved to Arizona and after taking a hiatus from the sport due to school and becoming a new father Brian was eager to get back into it. Last year Brian moved back to Hawaii and re-joined Teamjet as soon as possible. He enjoys the sport, and with approximately 20 years of Triathlon experience, he looks forward to helping others develop their passion for the sport as well.

Chad Walton

And from the blue corner...returning after a several year hiatus from TeamJet (to graduate, get married and completely rebuild a house; in that order)... Chad Walton. Chad returns with his knowledge and personality (you can decide on the merits of those) to help guide the marathon group to another successful year. Chad has a long history of running, but now primarily relies on his work in gene therapy to provide that little something extra for those looking to outrun a cheetah. He has a penchant for speed work on grass, and is excited to share his insights and coaching techniques with all levels of TeamJetters.
